Brisbane City Council Launches Roundabout Yoga — Finding Inner Peace Between the Roadworks
In its most spiritual infrastructure project yet, Brisbane City Council has announced “Community Roundabout Yoga” — a mindfulness initiative held in the very spots most Brisbanites lose theirs.
The program, described as “a fusion of serenity and near-death experience,” invites residents to lay their yoga mats in the middle of major intersections while peak-hour traffic swirls around them like an angry mantra.
A council spokesperson says the idea promotes “urban calm” and “a renewed respect for the road.” Participants are urged to “find stillness amid chaos” — which is also the council’s motto for managing roadworks.
Each session begins with deep breathing, followed by “downward dog while dodging Hiluxes.” The class concludes with a communal chant of “Om… and please indicate next time.”
Local drivers are divided. Some say it’s “a bloody hazard,” while others call it “the most peaceful thing Brisbane’s done since Expo ’88.”
The council claims the initiative is a “win for wellness and congestion management,” explaining that “if we can’t fix traffic flow, we may as well learn to meditate through it.”
Future projects include:
“Mindfulness at the M1 Merge” — controlled breathing while trapped behind a caravan.
“Zumba at the Zebra Crossing” — cardio and chaos, together at last.
And the visionary “Namaste by the Noise Barrier.”
So next time you’re stuck in Brisbane traffic, don’t honk — breathe. You might just achieve enlightenment… or get fined for parking on a yoga mat.
